So I read through the posts regarding growing standard Opt Feed and I was wondering if folks have experience getting enough Ingredients to make Organic Opt Feed. The productivity and resistance bonuses are much better, but there are more ingredients. How do you balance the lower yield crops with the higher yield cereals to get enough feed? Are there certain ingredients you buy from the market? I know past performance is no indicator for future yield but I'm looking for your experiences.
I've been making OOF for one and a half game years now and I think the most important thing is to grow at least one plot of each ingredient to make sure you can make it without relying on the market. So you need to start growing the watermelon and chili as soon as possible.
ReplyDeleteI tend to grow more watermelon than chili because there isn't much to do with extra chili peppers which are usually available on the market anyway in case you need more, but I can always make wine with the extra watermelons.
The cereals I tend to buy from the market are alfalfa and barley because I only grow one plot of those. It depends how many animals you plan to feed but if one plot of each cereal isn't enough then you have two options: a) grow one of each cereal and buy the extra from the market, or b) alternate every other year growing one/two of each cereal.
If you harvest your summer crops late and it seems too late to triple crop, don't grow garlic, just go for the fava beans. 7* garlic is always available at the end of winter/beginning of spring but not a lot of people sell fava to the market so you need to make sure you have your own.
You should also be really careful about hibernating. When I came back from hibernation last game year, my fava beans had expired before I could get my summer harvest of watermelon and chili so I was kind of screwed... I had to cull down my chickens and instead of using advanced organic feed on my cows I vaccinated them and used regular advanced, then regular optimum feed to delay having to use OOF.
Also, before you decide to use OOF you should think about which animals really need the productivity bonus. If you just need the ingredients for baking you could get by using regular optimum on your chickens and OOF for the cows. Or you could feed both of them OOF all year round which I have started to do and just cull down the chickens in spring to 1 male and a couple females for eggs.
The most important point to remember is that if you're running out of OOF, DO NOT switch to regular optimum. Just cull down to 1 male and 1 female to make your OOF last longer, otherwise it would take almost a full game year to get the productivity back to 491%.
Also, don't forget to max out the freshness upgrades on your organic workshop.
ReplyDeleteThat's really helpful. I planted watermelon yesterday and as I expand (slowly) I'll start planting the others. I think this year I have all the cereals to start advanced organic feed and will do OOF next year. It will take that long for the bonuses to take full effect anyway.
